Introduction Message
Emergency Medicine demands precision, rapid decision-making, and expertise in managing patients with undifferentiated conditions and minimal clinical history. The National Healthcare Group (NHG) Emergency Medicine Residency Programme is designed to cultivate these skills, equipping residents to excel as resuscitation leaders and acute care specialists. Over five years, our comprehensive curriculum encompasses core Emergency Medicine principles alongside specialised domains, including pre-hospital care, disaster medicine, critical care, ultrasound, simulation training, communication, teaching, and operational management.
A career in Emergency Medicine is dynamic and challenging, set within the high-pressure environment of the Emergency Department. Residents must swiftly identify critically ill or injured patients, deliver immediate and effective care, and coordinate appropriate onward management. This necessitates sharp critical thinking, robust communication, and strong interpersonal skills to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.
Residents will encounter a diverse patient population, spanning all ages and a broad spectrum of pathologies. They must adeptly determine the appropriate care pathway—whether discharge with follow-up, admission to an observation unit, or inpatient care. To ensure versatility, residents rotate through clinical specialties such as internal medicine, cardiology, surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, and anaesthesia, fostering a comprehensive skill set to address varied clinical scenarios.
NHG hospitals, including Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Woodlands Health Campus, house some of Singapore's busiest Emergency Departments, with high volumes of trauma and ambulance cases. Our strategic co-location with national centres, such as the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), enriches the clinical experience. Residents benefit from exposure to diverse and complex cases, supported by a distinguished faculty, many of whom hold advanced qualifications in medical education. Through close mentorship and graduated responsibility, our programme ensures that graduates emerge as confident, competent Emergency Physicians, prepared to lead in any clinical situation.
