A. Motivation of the NHG-HOMER Grant
The NHG-HOMER Grant is a short-term grant designed to encourage clinicians, nurses, allied-health professionals, and education researchers to embark on health professions education (HPE) research. It funds projects that answer research questions in key areas in health professions education that will increase NHG educators’ knowledge of the theory and practice of HPE. The long-term goal of the NHG-HOMER Grant is to develop practical knowledge and theory in HPE that can contribute towards better education and training for our healthcare practitioners of future generations to better serve, care, and heal.
By HPE, we refer to the spectrum of educational activities that prepare healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and allied-health professionals for practice and continuous professional development.
B. Multiple principal investigators
HPE is inherently a multidisciplinary endeavor, often requiring an effective educator to integrate theory and practice of behavioral, biological, clinical, organizational, and social sciences to achieve HPE objectives. Additionally, HPE is embedded in a complex larger institutional environment in which close and interdependent relationships among healthcare practitioners are needed to provide quality care.
To recognize the interdisciplinary and interprofessional nature of medical education, NHG-HOMER Grant allows up to three PIs to be named on the grant application to promote a pluralistic approach to HPE research. Researchers are encouraged to work with counterparts in other disciplines and professions; and to combine perspectives, research designs, methodologies, and analytical techniques from different disciplines when appropriate.

C. Grant categories
There are two categories of award.
- Category A: Up to $5,000

Category A awards will be valid for one year with no extensions allowed. Applications for grants in Category B are strongly encouraged to have at least one junior doctor (e.g., medical student, resident, house-officer, medical officer, or registrar), junior nurse, or junior allied-health professional playing an active and meaningful role in the research team. Mentoring or coaching activities for junior research team members should be clearly delineated in grant applications.
