Emergency Medicine Residency Programme

Resident's Talk

"The Emergency Department: Endless 'You'll-never-believe-what-I-just-saw!' moments. "

Dr Teo Han Jie
Resident

Introduction Message

An Emergency Physician specialises in assessment, diagnosis, and management of the patient with minimal history and undifferentiated signs and symptoms. This programme hones the resident’s evaluation, resuscitative, and quick-thinking skills so that he/she becomes precise and proficient in managing illnesses or injuries across a wide range of acuity and age.

The NHG Emergency Medicine (EM) Residency Programme trains the resident to be a resuscitation leader and an acute care specialist. In our 5-year programme, we cover the essential topics of emergency medicine as well as pre-hospital and disaster medicine, observational medicine, simulation, ultrasound, communication and teaching skills, and “shop floor” management.

A career as an emergency medicine specialist means that work is unpredictable and sometimes stressful, but it will never be dull. In a challenging and high-pressure environment of the emergency department, the resident has to accurately identify the critically ill and injured, provide safe and effective immediate care, and plan for definitive care. Hence, each resident will need to develop critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills in order to work as a team and to thrive in this fast-paced adrenaline-enriched environment.

The resident will also be caring for patients with a wide range of pathologies in all age groups, so he/she must be able to place patients on the correct care pathways. He/she requires the ability to discern which patient needs discharge with follow-up, an admission to an emergency department-based observation unit, or an admission to the hospital. In order to ensure that each resident is equipped with the skills to cater to a wide range of patients and conditions, he/she will be required to rotate through various clinical specialties such as medicine, cardiology, surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, anaesthesia and more during the course of the residency.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) is the largest Emergency Department in Singapore with one of the highest trauma and SCDF ambulance volumes amongst the public hospitals. This large volume of cases presents the resident with an opportunity to work with rich clinical material. Additionally, our faculty is dedicated to providing close supervision and mentorship to each resident. This way, the resident, through graduated responsibility, will exit the NHG Emergency Medicine Residency Programme as a competent emergency physician, confident of holding his/her own in any situation.
