My experience with the NHG Psychiatry Residency has affirmed my passion for this specialty, as I felt warmly supported in this unique national programme. Everyone is provided with many opportunities to learn from the different passionate faculty members and take on leadership roles while rotating through different departments. Given a second chance, I will still choose to be a NHG Psychiatry resident once again!
- Dr Cheryl Chang, Senior Resident
“Psychiatry has got to be one of the most fascinating career choices, and not just within the healthcare industry. We are privileged to be part of what may be our patients’ most vulnerable self and we hold the responsibility to uphold their dignity and fight the stigma that unfortunately still bears strongly today. NHG Psychiatry Residency is great as it remains a close-knit family and inherently promotes collegiality!’
- Dr Claire Law, Senior Resident
"My fascination with the interface between the brain and behavior is what made me want to pursue a specialty in psychiatry. But being given the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals who not only have the same interest but also have the passion to further mental health made me want to continue despite the challenges we face on a daily basis. Residency made me realise that lifelong learning need not be a lonely road, especially if you have mentors and colleagues that always provide encouragement and support."
- Dr Vincent Lu, Junior Resident
"Being able to practise psychiatry is a privilege. Beyond diagnosis and management of disease, I am granted access into what makes patients, humans; their hopes and fears, expectations and disappointments. Every patient is different and each requires a unique assessment and treatment plan. Though this can be challenging, I find it rewarding to be part of their journey towards recovery.Psychiatry allows me to consider each patient as a whole, rather than mere composition of flesh and blood. More than treating the body, I am given the opportunity to comfort the soul. "
- Dr Ang Ren Xuan, Junior Resident
"The Psychiatry Residency Programme, being a national programme, provides a unique platform for rotating through the various institutions. This has enabled me to learn from the many esteemed seniors in this field and forge many close ties. The structure of the programme also allows for exposure to a broad range of clinical experiences which has greatly benefitted my learning. It has been an enriching journey thus far and one without regrets!”
- Dr Goh Shih Ee, Senior Resident
"Psychiatry extends beyond the scientific realm; it invites distinctive challenges like acquiring insight into local and foreign traditions and worldviews, nurturing awareness of rising social and political trends, cultivating openness to cultural norms across various age groups, and crucially the intellectual and emotional negotiation of stigma against mental health. This programme grants therefore the opportunity not simply for a doctor to be become a psychiatrist, but also for a man to traverse the greatest distance, that between his mind and the innermost recesses of another’s heart and soul."
- Dr Nicholas Oh, Junior Resident
