Career Pathways for Doctors

Career Pathways for Doctors

Overview

With the increasing demands for safer, evidence-based, and novel patient care treatments, various career pathways for doctors have emerged. Doctors in NHG may embark on career pathways that focus on:

  1. Research and Innovation
  2. Clinical Education
  3. Clinical Informatics
  4. Patient Safety and Quality

Research and Innovation

NHG together with its academic partner, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) have established the Academy of Clinician Scientists and Innovators (ACSI) to develop Clinician Scientists and Clinician Innovators within our cluster.

1.       Clinician Scientist (CS)

A CS development roadmap has been developed to build up our clinicians' research capabilities through training and guidance from experts to support them at the various stages of their clinical research career. The CS programmes are administered by the Clinician Scientists Development Office (CSDO).

The list of CS programmes available via ACSI are as follows:

  • NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Preparatory Programme (CSPP)
  • NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Preparatory Programme Plus (CSPP+)
  • NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Fellowship (CSF)
  • NHG-LKCMedicine Clinician-Scientist Career Scheme (CSCS)

2.       Clinician Innovator (CI)

The CI development programmes aim to empower aspiring CIs with knowledge and skills in this field. The programmes are also administered by CSDO.

The list of CI programmes available via ACSI are as follows:

  • NHG Centre for Medical Technologies & Innovation (CMTi) Clinician Innovator Preparatory Programme (CiPP)
  • NHG Centre for Medical Technologies & Innovation (CMTi) Clinician Innovator Preparatory Programme Plus (CiPP+)

Please visit the NHG Research & Development Office website for more information.

Clinical Education

The NHG Faculty Development Framework was developed to support our clinical educators to achieve education-related competencies and deepen their education expertise.

NHG Group Education has collaborated with NHG College to provide programmes that will hone the competencies of clinical educators. Please follow the link here for more information.

Our doctors in NHG are also appointed as clinical educators by the medical schools, namely NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine) and NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) to teach medical students during their clinical training in NHG institutions.

We also develop our residents as clinical educators by supporting their development in clinical teaching and mentoring through our DREAM (Developing Resident Educators and Mentors) programme.

Clinical Informatics

Clinical informatics uses the knowledge of computer science, information science and health science to assist in the management and processing of data in order to support healthcare and healthcare delivery.

Doctors interested in pursuing a healthcare informatics career may choose to advance their learning through programmes administered by National University of Singapore (NUS) Advance Computing for Executives (ACE) and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Department of Biomedical Informatics. Please follow the link here and here for more information on the programmes.

Patient Safety and Quality

The Institute of Healthcare Quality (IHQ) provide programmes for our doctors who are keen on exploring their interests in patient safety and healthcare quality including risk management.

Doctors keen on pursuing a career focused on any of these areas may also speak to your respective Head of Department to learn more.
