Introduction Message
Advanced Internal Medicine is a broad-based medical specialty that positions Internists to deliver truly patient-centred, holistic care. This programme empowers the resident to deal with the most complex of cases with undifferentiated medical problems or patients with medical issues spanning specialties.
The NHG Advanced Internal Medicine (AIM) Residency Programme is a comprehensive 2-year programme offered at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Khoo Teck Puat (KTPH) and Woodlands Health (WH; from 2025 onwards) campuses. It aims to build on the resident's knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviour gained during the basic residency years by exposing him/her to a vast multitude of clinical cases, didactic lectures, workshops, elective postings, research, and teaching opportunities. Our curriculum also offers an unparalleled exposure to subspecialties of Internal Medicine such as Obstetric Medicine, Vascular Medicine, Peri-operative Care, and Palliative Medicine. In addition, during rotations, the Senior Resident would have a chance to gain experience in providing care across acute medicine wards, inpatient wards, subacute care, outpatient clinics as well as ‘hospital at home’; providing for patient care in the community.
Upon graduating the AIM Residency, the resident will be able to provide excellent evidence-based medical care for adult patients admitted into the hospital or seen in the clinic for multiple medical conditions, undifferentiated symptoms, or signs. More importantly, each Internist will be a
highly proficient:
Diagnostician: in the assessment and diagnosis of acute or chronic multi-system illnesses or undifferentiated conditions.
Provider of Integrated Care: who collaborates with other specialties in the management of patients in a holistic way.
Problem Solver: who is able to find solutions to problems that imprecisely conform to established guidelines and available evidence.
Patient Advocate: who values patients' preferences and is able to personalise management strategies based on patients' socioeconomic and cultural needs.
Communicator: who is able to counsel patients and their family members, and resolve conflicts.
Leader and Innovator: who provides evidence-based, cost effective, and quality care devoid of conflicts of interest. Someone who is able to function in leadership and management roles.
Teacher and Mentor: who imparts essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills that medical students, young doctors, and other health professionals need to acquire if they are to adequately cope with the challenges of modern healthcare.
