Introduction Message
Post-graduate year 1 (PGY1) is the 12-month training year after completion of basic medical education. Completion of PGY1 training makes you eligible for medical registration. It prepares you for future unsupervised independent practice.
With a strong teaching culture in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), we aim to equip our PGY1 doctors with the necessary clinical experience and skills in order to assume increasing responsibility for patient care under supervision. We also provide a motivating platform to support your career aspirations in our residency programmes.
You will experience both the breadth and depth of clinical diversity, along with the camaraderie of working in a busy restructured hospital. The PGY1 (TTSH) programme promotes a culture of patient safety, advocates protected training time and embraces the work-life balance ethos. You are assured of supervision and mentoring to cater to your educational and training needs as you strive to serve with distinction the cause of humanity, teaching, training and research.
General Medicine
The General Medicine Department at TTSH provides training in a wide variety of undifferentiated case presentations. Here, the PGY1 doctor will learn to manage patients in a comprehensive and holistic manner. You will also gain the ability to obtain information, arrive at correct diagnoses in a timely manner, and institute appropriate management plans.
General Surgery
The General Surgery Department is one of the only few true generalist departments where every specialist still pursues general surgery aside from subspecialist interests; hence case diversity is assured. Through structured teaching and academic activities, the PGY1 doctor will gain exposure to the basics of surgical care in general surgery, surgical critical care, hepatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery, trauma surgery, breast and endocrine surgery, upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery, vascular surgery, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery, and surgical oncology.
Orthopaedic Surgery
Under the Orthopaedic Surgery rotation, the PGY1 doctor is given progressive responsibility for the care of patients under the supervision of faculty members. You will also attain a good grounding in the areas of geriatric medicine, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, and hand surgery, which are crucial elements of Orthopaedic Surgery training.
