Introduction Message

Post-graduate year 1 (PGY1) is the 12-month training year after completion of basic medical education. Completion of PGY1 training makes you eligible for medical registration. It prepares you for future unsupervised independent practice.

The PGY1 (TTSH) programme promotes a culture of patient safety and teaching excellence, with a strong tradition of mentorship and support for our junior doctors. We aim to equip our PGY1s with the clinical experience and competencies necessary to assume increasing responsibility for patient care under supervision. With the solid foundation in your PGY1 year, we also provide a springboard to support your career aspirations through further training subsequently in our residency programmes.

You will experience both the breadth and depth of clinical work, and a strong spirit of camaraderie amongst your peers and seniors while working in a busy restructured hospital.

General Medicine

The General Medicine Department at TTSH provides training in a wide variety of undifferentiated case presentations. As a PGY1, you will learn to manage patients in a comprehensive and holistic manner. You will also gain the ability to obtain information, arrive at correct diagnoses in a timely manner, and institute appropriate management plans.

General Surgery

The General Surgery Department is one of the only few true generalist departments where every specialist still pursues general surgery aside from subspecialist interests, hence case diversity is assured. Through structured teaching and academic activities, the PGY1 will gain exposure to the basics of surgical care in general surgery, surgical critical care, hepatobiliary surgery, colorectal surgery, trauma surgery, breast and endocrine surgery, upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery, vascular surgery, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery, surgical oncology, and have the chance to rotate through the urology department.

Orthopaedic Surgery

Under the Orthopaedic Surgery rotation, PGY1s are given progressive responsibility for the care of patients under the supervision of faculty members. You will also obtain good grounding in the areas of orthogeriatric peri-operative management, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, and hand surgery, which are crucial elements of Orthopaedic Surgery training.
