Learning Experience

Training in Endocrinology is both challenging and rewarding. At NHG, beyond developing clinical competencies, we hope to grow our senior residents into mature clinician-leaders who are able to work in interdisciplinary teams, practice with a deep contextual understanding of the wider healthcare system, and improve themselves continually.

To these ends, we are intentional about the design of supervision across training. We aim to guide where appropriate, shore up identified deficiencies, and push residents to achieve their potential.

Training involves a balanced spread of inpatient and outpatient work. Inpatient duties include answering cross-specialty referrals, ward work, and diabetes care rounds. Senior residents run at least two outpatient clinics per week under supervision, with an emphasis on continuity of patient care. Learning is further enhanced with opportunities to attach to a variety of subspecialty clinics in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Woodlands Health and KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

Research opportunities are plentiful. Our programme is committed to fostering the next generation of clinical research leaders. Through carefully curated grant-funded research programmes, we offer a nurturing ecosystem within which aspiring senior residents can grow their interests and develop their research careers.

We seek also to develop our senior residents as lifelong teachers - of their peers, junior clinicians, undergraduates, and patients. Senior residents are rostered to various teaching roles and appointments. For those interested, there are opportunities to contribute to patient group education sessions.

Evaluations include workplace-based assessments, in-training examinations, the MRCP(UK) specialty certificate examination, case write-ups, and an exit viva-voce. We will work with residents to ensure they are well prepared for these.

We acknowledge that the step up from junior residency, in terms of clinical responsibilities and expectations, is significant. This can challenge even the best senior residents. In our view, good-quality training and intentional support are necessary for senior resident wellness. Conversely, wellness undergirds good training progress. We hope to equip our senior residents with the resilience they need to flourish in long careers of public sector service.
