Introduction Message
An Emergency Physician specialises in assessment, diagnosis, and management of the patient with minimal history and undifferentiated signs and symptoms. This programme hones the resident's evaluation, resuscitative, and quick-thinking skills so that he/she becomes precise and proficient in managing illnesses or injuries across a wide range of acuity and age.
The NHG Emergency Medicine Residency Programme trains the resident to be a resuscitation leader and an acute care specialist. In our 5-year programme, we cover the essential topics of Emergency Medicine as well as specialised topics such as pre-hospital medicine, disaster medicine, critical care medicine, observational medicine, simulation training, ultrasound, communications, teaching skills, and “shop floor" management.
A career as an Emergency Physician means that work is unpredictable and sometimes stressful, but it will never be dull. In the challenging and high-pressure environment of the Emergency Department, the resident has to accurately identify the critically ill and injured, provide safe and effective immediate care, and plan for definitive care. Hence, each resident will need to develop critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills in order to work as a team and to thrive in this fast-paced adrenaline-infused environment.
The resident will also be caring for patients with a wide range of pathologies in all age groups, so he/she must be able to place patients on the correct care pathways. He/she requires the ability to discern which patient needs discharge with follow-up, an admission to an emergency department-based observation unit, or an admission to the hospital. In order to ensure that each resident is equipped with the skills to cater to a wide range of patients and conditions, he/she will be required to rotate through various clinical specialties such as medicine, cardiology, surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, anaesthesia and more during the course of residency.
National Healthcare Group hospitals have some of the busiest Emergency Departments in Singapore with high trauma and ambulance volumes amongst the public hospitals. Our hospitals are also collocated with major national disease centres like National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and National Neuroscience Institute (NNI).
A large variety of cases presents the resident with an opportunity to work with rich clinical material. Additionally, our world class faculty, many with Masters in Medical Education, is dedicated to providing close supervision and mentorship to each resident. This way, the resident, through graduated responsibility, will exit the NHG Emergency Medicine Residency Programme as a competent Emergency Physician, confident of holding his/her own in any situation.
