Introduction Message
A General Surgeon has specialised knowledge in preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of a broad spectrum of diseases. This programme trains the resident to become a competent broad-based surgeon, who is an expert in diagnosis, treatment, and operative intervention.
The NHG General Surgery Residency Programme is a comprehensive 5-year training programme conducted in a structured clinical and academic environment. Our programme provides the resident with individualised surgical training and progressive patient care responsibilities that stimulate inquiry and a passion for lifelong learning. He/she will be equipped with core competencies in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, and professionalism and system-based practice. This ensures each resident develops into a well-grounded and independent surgeon who provides high quality, patient-centred care.
Mr Charles Jenning’s 70:20:10 Framework, as depicted in the diagram below, describes a resident’s continuous learning journey. Our programme adopts his framework because we believe that a resident gains knowledge from daily work experience through sharing with peers and faculty and through structured developmental activities. The resident will also receive guidance from dedicated clinical educators, surgical faculty, and non-surgical faculty who are committed to enriching the resident’s learning experience. With their support, the resident can expect to advance his/her knowledge in the continually evolving field of surgical practice.
In 2022, we continued accreditation from the ACGME-I (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-International), a US-based not-for-profit organisation that sets the standards for graduate medical education programmes as well as the institutions that sponsor them. The Council also renders accreditation decisions based on compliance with those standards.

Training Sites Comprising JCI-Accredited Hospitals (Programme Partners)
This programme is conducted at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). These two hospitals have a highly collaborative clinical and educational environment that comprises of comprehensive surgical, non-surgical, and allied health services. As such, they provide opportunities for the resident to learn a diverse range of acute and elective surgical cases. We also collaborate with National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) to foster networking opportunities with clinicians and researchers outside of our parent institutions for the future benefit of all patients.
