Resident's Talk

“BEING IN PALLIATIVE MEDICINE REMINDS ME THAT EVERY PERSON'S STORY MATTERS, AND THROUGH OUR PRESENCE AS A BRIDGE OF COMPASSION, WE AIM TO MAKE EACH MOMENT MEANINGFUL AND ALLEVIATE SUFFERING WITH EMPATHY AND GRACE."

“Embarking on Palliative Medicine training was a decision that I pondered on for some time - Would I be able to balance the commitments of training with other life priorities? Each day, I have found life as a Palliative Medicine physician to be both challenging and yet meaningful. The broad exposure to palliative care in different healthcare settings as a trainee has helped me to gain the clinical experience to care for patients with advanced illness and complex needs. Working closely in skilled multi-disciplinary teams to journey with patients and their families at some of the most difficult times in their lives reminds me daily of why we do what we do - to treat competently, to counsel professionally, and most importantly, to care with compassion.”

Dr Germaine Liu, Palliative Medicine Resident

When I was a 4th year medical student, I had a one day attachment to a hospice. That day, I witnessed the peace and serenity a patient could have despite being at the end of life. That day, I witnessed the kindness and compassion we could provide for our patients, and the privilege we have to be part of our patients' last journey. That day, I was inspired. Eight years later, I started my Palliative Medicine specialist training. While the training is challenging, the nature of the work in Palliative Medicine is very fulfilling and humbling. While providing for my patients, I have also gained more life experiences and life lessons in return. This to me is the most beautiful part of Palliative Medicine.

Dr Low Mei Xiu, Palliative Medicine Resident

“I feel incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to witness and journey alongside patients and their loved ones during the most vulnerable moments of their lives. The holistic approach of Palliative Medicine allows me to focus beyond physical symptoms and look into the emotional, social & spiritual needs of both patients & their families. Building meaningful connections by offering support that extends beyond medical treatment is incredibly fulfilling and everyday is a growing experience.”

Dr Nishini Piyara Mallawantantri, Palliative Medicine Resident

"Being in palliative medicine reminds me that every person's story matters, and through our presence as a bridge of compassion, we aim to make each moment meaningful and alleviate suffering with empathy and grace. The reflective nature of palliative medicine offers opportunities for growth, self-discovery and renewed dedication to providing compassionate care."

Dr Ong Chin Ee, Palliative Medicine Resident

"Before I entered Palliative Medicine, I had the impression that it would remind us of how little we as physicians can do. On the contrary, it made me realize how much we actually can do. It is where we humble ourselves in the face of death, and with the skills and responsibilities placed upon us, journey with patients through their remaining years. It is where we learn lessons and what it means to truly advocate for them. It is where the patients are, our teachers instead. Fast forward 10 years from my very first encounter with Palliative Medicine, I am still very much learning. Nothing defines medicine and fulfilment more than this."
