Hand Surgery (Integrated Programme)

NHG Hand Surgery Residency Programme

Resident's Talk

"Hand surgery intrigues me as our hands shape the world we live in. I feel that it is very meaningful to help patients recover the functions of their hand. In hand surgery, one would have the opportunity to develop the surgical skills to do so.”

Introduction Message

Hand Surgery is a specialty that manages  not just conditions of the hand but also reconstruction of the upper and lower extremities. Subspecialities include congenital hand, nerve and brachial plexus injuries, wrist, arthroscopy and arthroplasty as well as reconstructive microsurgery. This programme trains the resident to diagnose and manage these conditions with the aims of restoring function, contour and aesthetics.

The Singapore Integrated Programme (SIP) for Hand Surgery is a 4-year national training programme that follows a 2-year Surgery-In-General (SIG) Residency programme. Residents accepted into the Hand Surgery Residency will be accepted into the 6-year programme which flows seamlessly from the SIG to the SIP for Hand Surgery.

Hand Surgery Residency offers the resident a well-rounded and comprehensive training by locally and internationally renowned hand surgeons. Apart from learning how to operate on hand trauma and elective hand conditions, the resident will also learn how to perform reconstructive microsurgery in the form of free flap surgery. This ensures they are well-equipped with skills to manage soft tissue problems of the upper and lower limbs.

The resident will have the opportunity to rotate through elective postings including Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Paediatric Orthopaedics,  to gain more exposure during training. They will also attend workshops on tendon repair, hand and distal radius fracture fixation, and microsurgery.
