Introduction Message
It has been said that there is “no health without mental health”. Indeed, the recent COVID-19 pandemic that has swept the world including Singapore has brought to the fore the human face of any medical condition in terms of the psychological sequelae including anxiety, depression, traumatic stress symptoms, feelings of loss and grief. The process of healing and recovery needs to address both physical as well as the psychosocial issues faced by each affected individual. As we also move into the
HealthierSG initiative as a country, we need to attend to the comprehensive needs
of individual and our population at large. In this regard, the practice of Psychiatry calls for a holistic approach that combines the art and science of medicine in the evaluation and management of each patient that comes under our care. Our programme aims to train psychiatrists in the management of a wide range of psychiatric conditions to meet Singapore's present and future mental health needs as well as the promotion of psychological well-being.
The NHG National Psychiatry Residency Programme is a 5-year training programme that equips each resident with individualised and progressive responsibilities to manage patients in acute hospital and community settings. The nature of psychiatry has undergone immense transformation over the years, with advances in neurosciences and biological disciplines throwing light on the possible aetiological basis of psychiatric disorders and now with added impetus for digitalization, personalized and precision medicine. We believe that the practice of psychiatry requires the accumulation and distillation of understanding from different and diverse disciplines such as biological sciences, clinical medicine, social sciences such as psychology, and the humanities. The compact yet broad-based training curriculum within this programme thus ensures a firm foundation in the theoretical underpinnings of psychiatric disorders, which is accompanied by clinical experience and close supervision in diverse local treatment settings.
