​​Training Objectives

The end goal in mind is to develop sports medicine specialists who are:

  • Competent in the diagnosis and management of sports injuries.
  • Competent in fulfilling the duties of a Team Physician, including – Pre-participation screening, event medical coverage, doping control & counselling, early management of sports injuries and sports related medical conditions in primary care.
  • Competent in managing patients in disability sports.
  • Proficient in exercise testing and prescription in both diseased and disease-free populations.
  • Habitual life-long learners.
  • Proficient in applying principles of Sports Science in the management of athletes.
  • Familiar with a wide variety of sports
  • Professional in their interactions within the multidisciplinary team supporting the athlete.
  • Proficient in conducting applied research in the fields of Sports and Exercise Science and Medicine.
  • Proficient in conducting common investigations and procedures in Sports and Exercise Medicine

Rotations & Electives


Compulsory Rotations

  • 30 months in Sports Medicine, at accredited Acute Care Hospitals
  • 6 months in Sports Science, at Singapore Sports Institute


Elective Rotations (optional)

  • ​​Up to 6 months in the following specialties:
  1. Anaesthesiology (Underwater Medicine)
  2. Aviation Medicine
  3. Cardiology
  4. Emergency Medicine
  5. Endocrinology (e.g. Weight Management Centre @ CGH SSMC)
  6. Geriatric Medicine
  7. Orthopaedic Surgery
  8. Paediatric Medicine
  9. Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery
  10. Rehabilitation Medicine
  11. Respiratory Medicine
  12. Rheumatology​
  13. Others

Selection C​riteria

What are the programme's selection criteria?

Sports Medicine residents will be selected through an interview process. We are looking for the following qualities in our potential applicants:

Core Domains

Clinical Competence

  • Clinical experience in relevant postings
  • Good performance and feedback in prior postings

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team (including nursing and allied health professionals
  • Ability to communicate well with patients and NOK


P
ractice-Based Learning and Improvement

  • Involvement in research and/or innovative projects

Professionalism

  • Conscientiousness in completing administrative tasks (example: timely submission of forms/logs/reports, punctuality etc.)
  • Ability to uphold ethical principles, even in challenging circumstances

Personal Attribute

  • Commitment to completion of a pre-requisite residency program or to obtain the Master of Medicine in Family medicine (example of demonstration of commitment includes attempting Master of Medicine in Family medicine, doing relevant clinical rotations)
  • Leadership
  • Grit and diligenc​e

Pre-Requisites

To be eligible for sports medicine residency training, candidates would have to:

  • Acquire the Master of Medicine (MMed) in Family Medicine*​

Or be fully exited from one of the following base specialties:
  • Advanced Internal Medicine
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Orthopaedic Surgery​

*Applicants will need to be registered with the Family Physicians Accreditation Board (FPAB).
