An example of a weekly work schedule for a resident:
As part of the education and training process, it is critical for us to issue regular assessments and feedback to ensure the resident continually improves in his/her learning. The assessment will be in the form of senior and peer appraisals, and summative assessments such as:
- MRCS parts A & B
- Annual ABO in-training examinations
- MMed ORL
- Exit examination
The resident will be exposed and guided through all ENT surgical procedures. We also conduct yearly cadaveric dissection courses to increase the resident's speed in mastering surgical skills. The resident is also exposed to all local/regional conferences, symposiums, and workshops.
Our programme provides a platform for active involvement in research projects, providing full support to attend and present at local and overseas conferences.
Subspecialty Training Opportunities
We offer the resident opportunities to obtain further training in his/her subspecialty of interest.
Besides providing the resident with a balance between the medical and surgical management of patients, we now offer opportunities to contribute in areas outside of clinical ORL medicine, such as in research or academic teaching.
During their residency programme, each resident:
Is required to complete :
- 1 oral presentation in a learned society or conference
- 1 scientific poster presentation in a learned society or conference
- 1 publication (Pubmed) as 1st author (conduct and complete at least one study/case report)
Is provided dedicated protected time to participate in research.
We guide and supervise each resident in his/her fulfilment of research objectives. If a presentation is conducted at an overseas conference, financial support is available for application to reimburse expenses.
Post-Residency: Subspecialty Training and Professional Development
Following the successful exit from our residency programme, we wish that each fully qualified ORL surgeon continues to pursue a career at NHG. Doing so helps him/her gain further experience and to upgrade his/her skills in our institutions that provide many opportunities for employment and growth.
For the ORL surgeon who wishes to subspecialise, there are opportunities to obtain further fellowship training in otology, rhinology, head and neck surgery, laryngology, and facial plastic surgery. This involves fully paid fellowship training in the surgeon's subspecialty of choice, usually at an overseas centre. We will assist by making the necessary contacts and introductions to the relevant overseas centres.
We also expect our staff to become teaching faculty at local medical schools, such as the NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
