NHG Otorhinolaryngology(ENT) Residency Programme

Resident's Talk

“I chose ENT because of the variety of procedures that require different skill sets in microscopic, endoscopic, and open surgery..."

Dr Tan Jian Li
Completed Residency 2019

Introduction Message:

Otorhinolaryngology is an exciting specialty that combines both medical and surgical approaches in managing disorders in a patient's ear, nose, and throat (ENT). This programme trains the resident to deliver the highest quality care for a full spectrum of ENT diseases, including areas within the head and neck.

The NHG Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Residency Programme is a 5-year programme that provides the resident with the most comprehensive and robust training, ensuring that he/she possesses the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude of a well-rounded ORL specialist. ORL encompasses the entire spectrum of surgical approaches, equipping the resident to attend to patients who require even formal surgeries. However, not all disorders require surgeries. With the help of specialised diagnostic ORL instruments, an outpatient clinic can manage the majority of ORL patients in the outpatient setting.

In our diversified and exciting subspecialty, we constantly work with different subspecialty and para-allied health colleagues in order to ensure a holistic and comprehensive management of our patients. We also collaborate across other disciplines such as radiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and neurosurgery to enhance the nature and content of the ORL specialty.

As our programme places heavy emphasis on education, each resident will be closely mentored by our specialists during structured teaching and academic activities, as well as on-the-job training to develop his/her clinical and surgical skills. In the operating theatres, the resident is also given every opportunity to assist and perform various operations under the close supervision and intense guidance of our experienced surgeons.
